San Diego stops rent payments, alleges corruption, gets notice to leave
City Attorney Mara W. Elliott announced the filing of a complaint to void the city’s lease-to-own agreements for the 101 Ash Street and Civic Center Plaza buildings in downtown San Diego. The deal, originally to provide office space for city employees, has been mired in controversy after an unresolved asbestos problem forced the Ash St. building to remain mostly vacant for over four years, despite the city making $535,000 monthly rental payments to the owner.




The city of San Diego has stopped paying its $300,000 monthly rent on a downtown office building and filed a lawsuit seeking to end what it says is a corrupt building deal. But the city may have been complicit in allowing the deal to go forward in the first place, an opposing attorney said Friday.
