Judge recusal sought for supporting prosecutor’s judicial campaign

Orange County Judge Gregory L. Prickett is among 70 current and retired superior court judges who have endorsed prosecutor Ebrahim Baytieh’s 2022 candidacy, according to his campaign website.

Defense attorneys for convicted murderer Paul Gentile Smith plan to ask the Orange County Superior Court judge assigned to Smith's retrial to recuse himself because of the judge's political endorsement of the prosecutor who won Smith's 2010 conviction.

Assistant Public Defender Sara Ross confirmed Monday she and Assistant Public Defender Scott Sanders plan to make the request at Smith's next hearing on Aug. 27.
