The new president of the Federal Bar Association of Los Angeles wants magistrate judges in the Central District to try more cases to ease the court’s backlog.

Under court rules, parties can consent to proceed to trial before a volunteering magistrate judge. The practice is widely used in the Northern District, Yuri Mikulka said. The Federal Bar Association intends to launch an awareness program next year about the benefits of trying a case...
