US fisheries service is sued to stop sablefish gear from entangling humpbacks

“What we want is for the agency to accurately assess the impacts of the fishery on the humpback whale packs because they’re critically endangered,” said Catherine W. Kilduff of the Center for Biological Diversity.

The National Marine Fisheries Service is failing to protect Pacific humpback whales from being entangled in fishing gear off the coasts of California, Oregon and Washington, the Center for Biological Diversity said in a lawsuit.
