Lawsuit alleges San Mateo County court fees are illegal

The lawsuit mirrors complaints in recent years by advocates for the poor across the nation who say local governments rely too much on fines and fees to meet their budgets.

Several legal nonprofits and Fenwick & West LLP sued to stop the San Mateo County Superior Court from assessing $300 against drivers who miss a traffic violation payment or fail to appear in court, though a spokesperson said San Mateo court's fee structure mirrors that of other counties in California.
