Bar’s draft budget adds $1M for trust account oversight

Under the program, attorneys could be required to report annually to the bar about whether they are responsible for client trust accounts and to provide basic account information and certify they know and comply with the rules of professional conduct related to safeguarding their client funds.

A million-dollar increase to strengthen oversight of client trust accounts and add employees to investigate attorneys accused of raiding client funds or other egregious acts is proposed in the 2022 State Bar draft budget.

At a recent meeting of the Finance Committee, the State Bar's chief financial Officer, Aracely Montoya-Chico, said the Office of Chief Trial Counsel could gain 10 more employees.
