In the Matter of Joan Irvine Smith: Howard Friedman, Lyndol Young and Howard Privett for the Plaintiff
Researching a book on the history of the Irvine Ranch introduced me – sadly posthumously – to two Los Angeles attorneys who served Smith in her quest to gain control of the company, as well as to one who opposed her as counsel to the foundation. The more I learned about them, the more I wished I had been able to talk to them about their legal adventures on behalf of their famous client.

Joan Irvine Smith was beautiful, wealthy and litigious.
The granddaughter of James Irvine II, who owned the Irvine Ranch in Orange County for nearly half a century, Smith spent more than two decades waging legal warfare against the Irvine Company and the charity that controlled it – the James Irvine Foundation.
The battlegrounds included courts in California and West Virginia, as well as in Congress.
