SB 1304 won’t reduce crime, but should be signed anyway

Marketing SB 1304 as a public safety measure is wrong. The reasons for criminal behavior are complicated and driven by a variety of psychological, social, environmental, and economic factors.

SB 1304 raises the amount of gate money given to released state prisoners from $200 to $1300. The bill also proposes future gate money increases based on inflation. If passed, the bill would cost $42 million in its first year, versus the current $8 million already allocated.
