1st fentanyl murder trial opens in Riverside County
Defense attorney Michael L. Duncan told jurors that in order to convict they will be asked to conclude “that the only reasonable explanation for these circumstances is that … Mr. Romero went through the following thought process: ‘I know that this can kill me. I’m not feeling well. Oh yes, I think I’ll give this to somebody else.’”

RIVERSIDE — In a first in California, a man in Riverside County accused of providing fentanyl to a woman who fatally overdosed went on trial Wednesday on murder charges.
The deputy district attorney trying the case acknowledged in his opening statement that the case would be difficult to prove. But he said the defendant knew the drug was fatal and acted with implied malice when he shared it with the woman who died a few hours later.
