Judge upholds Santa Monica’s 5.6% ‘mansion tax’

Measure GS was approved by 53% of the voters in November 2022. It added a third tier to the city’s transfer tax structure effective March 1.

A judge in Santa Monica on Friday upheld the city’s transfer tax, which imposes a 5.6% fee on properties that sell for $8 million or more.

Judge H. Jay Ford III denied the California Business Roundtable’s motion on the pleadings, saying that their allegations do not clearly establish that Measure GS violates the single-subject rule of the California Constitution.
