California’s domestic abuse law extends to financial harms, Court of Appeal rules

The 4th District Court of Appeal reversed a trial judge in Riverside.

Reversing a trial court judge, a unanimous panel of the 4th District Court of Appeal said the Domestic Violence Protection Act applies to financial harms inflicted on future victims.

Justice Michael J. Raphael wrote in the opinion that Riverside County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Zimel’s decision to limit evidence of abuse under the statute to physical violence “calls into question the court’s understanding” of the domestic violence law.<...
