PG&E says deal to close Diablo Canyon now ‘null and void’

Attorneys for PG&E told a San Francisco judge that a deal with Friends of the Earth to shut the nuclear plant in 2022 was superseded by the Legislature and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. asked a San Francisco judge Monday to toss a lawsuit by an environmental rights group suing to prevent continued operation of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant.

The plaintiff, Friends of Earth, claims that PG&E’s attempt to keep operating the plant violates the utility’s 2016 agreement with the organization to close the plant in 2025 because of the earthquake risk.
