Federal higher pay rule could affect California companies

California firms could be pressured to increase their wages if they have employees in other states who start earning as much as their managers in California, Seyfarth Shaw litigator Brett C. Bartlett said.

A White House proposal to expand overtime pay eligibility will almost certainly be challenged in court and on the campaign trail, and could indirectly impact wages in California, according to labor law experts.

The proposal, announced by the Department of Labor this week, would raise the minimum salary threshold for overtime-exempt employees from $35,568 per year to $55,068. It would impact an estimated 3.6 million workers nationwide, but ...
