Court: Trial rights of violent sex predators not violated
Convicts facing involuntary civil commitment for being a sexually violent predator after their prison term ends have a due process right to a timely trial, but whether their counsel requests or agrees to the delays can be considered, the state Supreme Court ruled.




A 15-year delay to determine whether a sexually violent child predator could be released after his prison term does not violate his right to speedy trial because defense counsel requested or agreed to most of the continuances, the California Supreme Court unanimously ruled.
