Fentanyl murder verdict sends message to lawmakers, senator says

“I think that the verdict highlights the danger of fentanyl and the danger of any sort of distribution of it that it is different than any other illegal substance and synthetic drug that we’ve ever encountered before,” said state Sen. Tom Umberg, D-Santa Ana.

California’s first fentanyl related jury trial — which resulted in a second-degree murder verdict with implied malice in Riverside County — may encourage more district attorneys to file these cases, be overturned on appeal, or inspire legislators to enact a specific law supporting such prosecutions.
