Afghan asylum seekers OK settlement with government

Pro bono counsel from Kirkland & Ellis LLP and the National Immigrant Justice Center stated in the complaint that the asylum seekers were promised after the United States withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021 that the government would process their applications within 150 days of filing.

Afghan asylum seekers asked a federal judge in Oakland for preliminary approval of a settlement they reached with the government. If approved, it would establish a timeline for the adjudication of 20,000 asylum applications and require the government to file public status reports every 30 days to show compliance with deadlines.

Oral arguments on the motion are set to take place before U.S. District Judge Jon S. Tigar on Monday.
