Intuit engaged in deceptive adverting, FTC judge says

“Numerous, widely distributed advertisements for TurboTax expressly or impliedly represented that the consumer-viewer would be able to file their taxes online for free using TurboTax, when, for a significant proportion of these consumers, this was simply untrue,” Judge D. Michael Chappell wrote.

Intuit Inc. engaged in deceptive advertising by promoting its TurboTax service as free, an administrative law judge with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission held in a decision anticipated by the financial software company.

Judge D. Michael Chappell’s ruling in favor of the FTC in a lawsuit brought by the agency was announced on Friday.
