Law could export California’s ban on noncompete clauses

Employment attorneys say they do not expect SB 699, which will go into effect Jan. 1, to block out-of-state employers from heading to court to prevent workers from taking similar positions with California companies.

A law that was quietly signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom this month after easily passing the state Legislature seeks to export California’s public policy barring noncompete agreements to deals signed by workers in other states.
