State OKs $14M to improve services to deaf consumers

“I actually have felt that this is a good example of how a case ought to be handled,” said Senior U.S. District Judge Susan Illston. “It doesn’t happen that often.”

Deaf consumers and the California Department of Developmental Services attained final approval Friday for a settlement that includes sweeping policy changes to ensure hearing-impaired people have effective communication, specialists to aid them, a new process for assessing their needs and $14 million in grants to fund these reforms.
