Jury awards nearly $500,000 to former inmate over withheld mail

“This case sends a message that it’s not enough to merely prevent a physical injury. Prison officials have to be aware of the basic constitutional rights inmates have, and they can’t trample over them,” lead attorney Pierce MacConaghy said.

Following a three-day trial, a federal jury awarded nearly $500,000 to a former California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation inmate after attorneys argued prison personnel violated his constitutional rights by withholding his mail.
