Bill to give unemployment pay to striking workers is nixed

Gov. Gavin Newsom didn't mention the main argument business groups and their attorneys had made against the bill: that it would tip the scales in favor of striking workers by removing the financial incentive to end their strikes.

As Hollywood writers and actors walked picket lines in recent weeks, they weren't just demanding new contracts from studios. Union leaders representing both professions lobbied hard to pass a bill to offer unemployment insurance benefits for striking workers.

Gov. Gavin Newsom denied the unions that particular Hollywood ending. He nixed SB 799 on Saturday.
