Deputy AG defends state’s early prison release policies

Deputy Attorney General Gregory J. Marcot said the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s “broad authority” under Proposition 57 to offer early release to prisoners includes ones incarcerated for violent crimes.

SACRAMENTO — A deputy state attorney general told a Sacramento County judge Monday that critics of California’s early prison release policies should take their issues up with the voters.

“I understand people may not be happy,” said Deputy Attorney General Gregory J. Marcot at a hearing before Superior Court Judge Jennifer K. Rockwell.
