A divided 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel on Saturday granted the state of California's request for an emergency stay of a district judge's order striking down the state's ban on semi-automatic rifles, keeping the ban in place.
The stay by Senior U.S. District Judge Roger T. Benitez, an appointee of President George W. Bush, was to expire Sunday. That would have allowed the sale of semi-automatic rifles to start after more than three decades.
