Justice consider whether officials can block citizens from social media accounts

Many of the questions involved the unique role of social media sites, whether they should be treated as private property, and if posts and comments on those personal accounts should be considered state actions.

The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday about whether government officials — including two trustees of the Poway Unified School District northeast of San Diego — violated the First Amendment by blocking Facebook commenters who were critical of their actions.

It was not clear how the justices, who also considered a similar case involving a city manager in Michigan during three hours of oral arguments, would resolve the issue.
