State struggles to explain Newsom’s approach to tribal gaming

The tribe’s attorney, Curtis Vandermolen, said the law limits negotiations to seven subjects directly related to gaming, and that the state violates the law if it attempts to include other topics at any point.

A deputy attorney general had a difficult time explaining Gov. Gavin Newsom’s approach to negotiating tribal gaming compacts during a court appearance on Friday.
