Judge praises prisons’ mental health report, asks for more data
Chief U.S. District Judge Kimberly J. Mueller acknowledged the department has been held back by a shortage of mental health staff. The department could face millions of dollars in fines if it doesn’t address its staffing problems.




SACRAMENTO — A Tuesday morning hearing in a decadeslong case about mental health care in California prisons followed what has become a traditional pattern: The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation asked for more time, and attorneys for the plaintiffs said that the agency has had years to address its problems.
