Judge finalizes order for tribal casinos to end state control

The judgments came after months of rulings against the state over tribes' claims that Gov. Gavin Newsom's administration violated the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act by attempting to persuade them to follow state labor, environmental, spousal and child custody laws.

A federal judge has issued his final judgment in four cases freeing tribal casinos from state control. The orders signed Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Kirk E. Sherriff mark the latest step in a years-long process that has increasing shifted oversight of tribal gaming operations to the federal government and away from the state.
