9th Circuit panel questions constitutionality of California social media law

AB 587, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom in 2022, requires companies with more than $100 million in gross annual revenues to file regular reports with the state about how they moderate topics such as hate speech, racism, extremism and foreign political interference.

A 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel appeared inclined to enjoin a state law that would require social media companies to disclose their content moderation policies during oral arguments Wednesday in a challenge filed by X Corp., formerly Twitter.
