Vested rights don't exempt landlord from new tenant protections, judge rules

Nothing in the building permits contains or suggests "a promise that petitioner will be free of future tenant protections enacted by the city," Judge James C. Chalfant wrote.

Does a building permit granted by Culver City for a multi-million-dollar renovation project exempt the landlord from tenant protections and rent control ordinances adopted after it was issued?

Not according to Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge James C. Chalfant, who dismissed Fox Hills Canterbury Co.'s claims in their entirety on Wednesday without leave to amend.
