Boudin-led Berkeley center sues state over gate money

UC Berkeley's Criminal Law & Justice Center, headed by former San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin, claims the state has unlawfully deducted clothing and transportation costs from the funds prisoners receive upon their release.

A proposed class action accuses the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation of unlawfully withholding "gate money" from released prisoners since 1994.
