Bay Area trademark battle over airport names heats up

The Oakland Port Commission unanimously voted this year to transform Oakland International Airport into San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport, which San Francisco city officials argued will throw off visitors and damage the region's travel industry.

A trademark battle between two Bay Area cities over a proposed airport name change is heating up as attorneys for the City of San Francisco petitioned a federal judge to enjoin the City of Oakland from rebranding its airport. 

Trademark law experts commented on Wednesday that San Francisco has strong claims and will likely convince the court to grant some relief.
