Religious groups call fraud suit over church's use of tithes 'enormous threat'

An amicus curiae brief filed by a host of religious denominations said a 9th Circuit panel decision to revive former member James Huntsman's fraud complaint against the church threatened all of them and already has inspired copycat lawsuits against the Mormon church.

Religious organizations told an appellate panel that allowing a fraud lawsuit by a former member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints over how his tithes were used poses an "enormous threat" to them and already has inspired copycat lawsuits.

A 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals en banc panel will consider the case next Wednesday. But in other amicus curiae briefs, attorneys for religious nonprofits say the churches' concerns are overstated.
