New law requires closer look at suicides of abuse victims

SB 989 seeks to build on a growing body of research that aims to flag suspicious suicides.

SACRAMENTO -- A new state law could potentially open hundreds of old criminal cases and even take violent abusers off the streets. SB 989 seeks to take advantage of new research its supporters say makes it possible to better understand when a crime scene was staged to make a murder look like a suicide.
