IBM sues San Francisco seeking tax refund

Attorneys for the company claim that San Francisco overcharged it for two separate taxes and should have refunded the money following a settlement agreement earlier this year.

IBM sued the City and County of San Francisco this week over $2.1 million in taxes it allegedly overpaid between 2019 and 2020 that were the subject of a settlement agreement earlier this year.

The company claims that San Francisco overcharged it for two separate taxes: a gross receipts tax, which includes a Homelessness Gross Receipts Tax, upon every person engaged in business within the city; and a payroll expense tax on persons engaged in business in the city. International...
