Pipeline company to pay $72.5M to state, others for Refugio spill
The Lands Commission and Aspen American Insurance Co. sued Plains in 2018, claiming the company did not adequately maintain the pipeline and install safety equipment, like an automatic shutoff valve.
Plains All American Pipeline is on the hook for another large payout for a devastating 2015 oil spill in Santa Barbara County.
On Tuesday, Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis and the California State Lands Commission announced the company has agreed to pay $72.5 million to compensate for the Refugio Beach disaster. A nearly 30-year-old pipeline burst, spilling 120,000 gallons of crude oil into the Pacific Ocean.
