Care court is not conservatorship, Alameda County judge explains
After the program was initially challenged by organizations such as Disability Rights California as "unconstitutional," the public has seemingly been slow to embrace CARE Court as an option, with reported filings statewide totaling fewer than 800, according to the media relations office for the Judicial Council of California.
Superior Court Judge Sandra Bean, who is leading Alameda County's CARE Court department, said she aims to make sure the program is built on collaboration and added "we are not conserving people."
"It's absolutely not a court-ordered conservatorship. And in fact, it's the opposite," Bean said in an interview this week ahead of the Dec. 2 launch of the Community Assistance, Recovery and Empowerment (CARE) court.
