Judges: New ethics opinion discourages them from election-time defense
All the publicly posted comments from judges said the opinion's cautions - particularly suggestions that judges have others defend them in such situations - will discourage judges from taking advantage of the amendment to Canon 3B (9).
An ethics panel's final opinion aimed at encouraging California judges to take advantage of a 2020 Canon change allowing them to defend pending cases that are criticized during a recall or re-election campaign is likely to have the opposite effect, according to comments by the California Judges Association and several individual judges.
