Veterans' shelter needs outweigh VA budget woes, attorneys say

A federal judge in Los Angeles ordered the VA to construct 100 modular housing units this winter for homeless veterans. The VA said the cost, estimated at $30 million, would harm programs for veterans in other parts of the country.

The VA's request to block an order to build 100 modular housing units in the next three months in West Los Angeles because of claimed constraints on its budget pales in comparison to the needs of homeless and disabled veterans who will otherwise remain untreated and unhoused, plaintiffs' attorneys argued in an appellate court filing this week.
