Newsom's 2024 legislative haul: 1,017 new laws reshape legal landscape

Gov. Newsom signed more than 1,000 new laws this year, significantly impacting legal practices. Key changes include arbitration oversight, new workplace laws, and court operations modifications.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed 1,017 new laws in 2024, the most in at least two decades. But the year was also notable for the number of important measures that will affect the day-to-day lives of attorneys after Jan. 1.

Newsom signed laws that extended state oversight of the alternative dispute resolution industry, opened new causes of action for workers to sue employers, and affected the day-to-day operations of courts.
