California Supreme Court challenges ban on electronic court recordings
Justices ordered four county superior courts to explain why they should not be required to create verbatim recordings for low-income litigants unable to afford private court reporters. Advocates argue that a state law prohibiting electronic recordings in certain proceedings violates constitutional rights by depriving litigants of a record necessary for appeals.




The state Supreme Court issued an order to show cause Wednesday afternoon to four county superior courts asking why they shouldn't be required to create verbatim recordings for low-income litigants who cannot afford private court reporters.
