Michael B. Kaufman, a former deputy federal public defender, was sworn in a U.S. magistrate judge in the Central District of California.
Kaufman, who was sworn in Thursday, will be based in Los Angeles and succeeds former U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael R. Wilner, who retired from the bench and joined JAMS as an arbitrator and mediator last September, a statement from the court said. The Central District now has 24 filled full-time magistrate judge positions.
