A judge's ruling voids LA's ban on oil drilling, citing state preemption, handing a victory to well operators and royalty owners against city regulations.

A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge declared that City of Los Angeles ordinances banning new oil drilling are preempted by state law and violate the California Constitution, delivering a win to well operators and land royalty holders.

The ruling by Judge Curtis A. Kin invalidates the city's efforts to prohibit new oil drilling and regulate existing operations in a decision that could prove instructive for other counties, an attorney for the plaintiffs said.
