Federal judge upholds California semiautomatic rifle ban for young adults
Senior U.S. District Judge M. James Lorenz has upheld the state's restriction on semiautomatic rifle sales to 18- to 20-year-olds, citing Founding Era norms and rejecting a Second Amendment challenge revived after the U.S. Supreme Court's Bruen decision. The ruling is likely headed for further appeal amid a growing circuit split.




In a reversal of fortune from a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision in 2022, a federal judge in San Diego upheld a California law that bars licensed firearms dealers from selling semiautomatic centerfire rifles to 18- to 20-year-olds who are not active members of law enforcement or the military.
