California lawmakers push more age verification bills despite legal hurdles

Recent court rulings, including a new injunction in Ohio, and sharp criticism from privacy and First Amendment advocates suggest the legal foundation for such efforts may be eroding.

California lawmakers are pushing ahead with online child safety legislation centered on age verification, even as federal courts strike down similar laws in other states and free speech advocates warn the measures could do more harm than good.

A wave of rulings has cast doubt on the constitutionality of such laws, highlighting the growing tension between child protection efforts and digital privacy rights.
