Assembly bill would raise mediation cap, add safeguards

AB 1523, passed by the Assembly Judiciary Committee, would raise the mediation cap to $75,000 and adds safeguards to ensure only suitable civil cases are mediated, balancing court efficiency and access to justice.

More civil cases could end up in mediation under a bill passed by the Assembly Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

Assemblyman Ash Kalra, D-San Jose, told the committee that AB 1523 will "add safeguards to ensure that only cases with a high likelihood of amicable resolution are sent to mediation." The bill-- written by the committee, which Kalra chairs -- passed unanimously.
