Legislature's budget deal offers limited cuts to courts, partial funding for Prop 36

California lawmakers unveiled a revised state budget that avoids deep cuts to the judiciary and includes $110 million for Proposition 36 enforcement. But Gov. Newsom's resistance and criticism from key stakeholders underscore ongoing tensions over how -- and whether -- to fund the voter-approved diversion initiative.

Members of the California Legislature reached a budget deal that would impose only small cuts on courts. The revised budget bill, announced late Monday, would also provide $110 million to help enforce Proposition 36.

But that will not end the debate over the tough-on-crime voter initiative. Gov. Gavin Newsom has shown little inclination to fund the measure, which he opposed, while Proposition 36 supporters have called the allocation insufficient.
