Data brokers violate California privacy law, UC Irvine study finds

The CCPA, enacted in 2018 and amended in 2020, requires companies to give consumers access to or delete personal data upon request.

Nearly half of California's registered data brokers may be violating state privacy law, according to a University of California, Irvine study that found widespread noncompliance with the California Consumer Privacy Act.

UC Irvine computer scientists sent verifiable consumer requests to all 543 state-registered data brokers over seven months between late 2024 and early 2025. Only 57% responded, leaving 43% in apparent violation of the law.
