State Bar reiterates ban on paying for clients amid allegations involving DTLA Law Group

Chief Trial Counsel George Cardona said the State Bar cannot confirm or deny any investigation but reminded attorneys that California law forbids paying for client referrals. The comments come amid allegations that DTLA Law Group paid former foster youths to file false sexual abuse claims against Los Angeles County.

The State Bar has declined to take a position on Senate Bill 37, a proposed law that would tighten restrictions on attorney solicitations, but Chief Trial Counsel George Cardona warned that "California law prohibits attorneys from making payments, or causing others to make payments, to solicit clients."
