Sara K. Radin had barely taken her seat on the Los Angeles County Superior Court in 1978 when she was challenged at the ballot box.
Her appointment came during Gov. Jerry Brown's first term, a period marked by his effort to reshape California's judiciary to reflect the state's growing diversity.
"It was at a time when Jerry Brown was putting a lot of women and other minorities on the courts," recalled her son, Jonathan Gross.
