Judge signals contempt risk for LA over homeless shelter progress
A federal judge signaled he may hold Los Angeles in contempt for failing to meet settlement reporting obligations on homelessness. Plaintiffs argue the city withheld data, while the city insists it made significant progress.
A federal judge appeared ready Wednesday to hold the City of Los Angeles in contempt over alleged noncompliance with a settlement directing it to make more shelters and beds available for homeless people.
While his final ruling remains pending after he declined to hear witnesses appearing remotely, U.S. District Judge David O. Carter began Wednesday's contempt hearing by chastising the city for "performative compliance only resulting in the wake of court hearings." ...
